The basics
- Issuer
- VanEck
- Asset class
- Fixed income
- Number of holdings
- ~120
- Where it invests
- Emerging markets worldwide (e.g. South Africa, Malaysia, Mexico, Brazil, Eastern Europe).
- Income paid
- Monthly
- Currency hedged
- No — It's only partly hedged and deliberately holds emerging-market currencies, so exchange-rate movements are a real driver of returns, not just the bonds.
Its character
An actively managed emerging-market bond fund: a manager picks government and corporate bonds across developing countries, and the fund deliberately takes on some local-currency exposure. Higher income, but more risk than a developed-market bond fund, and a higher fee.
What to keep in mind
Emerging-market bonds pay more income but carry more risk — borrowers can default, and the currency and political swings can be large. Being actively managed and only partly hedged, returns lean on the manager's calls and on exchange rates.
Income
Income is paid monthly, from the interest on the bonds it holds.
