Its character
A global gold-mining fund: it owns the companies that dig up gold rather than gold itself, so it tends to amplify moves in the gold price — when gold rises, miners' profits can rise faster, and when it falls they can fall harder.
What to keep in mind
A concentrated, single-industry fund tied to one commodity — gold-miner shares can be far more volatile than the metal itself, swinging sharply with the gold price, mining costs and individual company fortunes.
